Dr. Oz made this statement just prior to introducing the topic of Reiki!

Is it a holistic healing art, a meditation technique, a type of bodywork? All this and more. The Japanese word Reiki means universal life force energy. It is the life force that flows through everything in the universe - our essence. The word Reiki consists of two parts: "Rei," which pertains to the universal, infinite quality of this energy - that which we call Spirit - and "ki," which is a subset of "rei," referring to the vital life force energy that runs through all living beings.

Many people may be more familiar with the Chinese word "chi," which holds the same meaning as "ki." Those acquainted with the martial arts have likely heard of chi. Hindus refer to this same life force energy as "prana."

Numerous cultures and religions have named this energy. Reiki, however, is not attached to any specific philosophy or religion and is available to all who wish to learn it. Anyone can become a Reiki channel by being initiated or "attuned" by a Reiki Master. Reiki "attunements" open a person to the healing energy, and once the channel is open that person will have access to Reiki for the rest of his or her life.

This universal life energy can promote healing and wholeness in every part of one's life and bring balance and harmony to body, mind and spirit.

This ancient healing technique was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in the late 1800s. Diana Henderson practices and teaches the Usui Shiki Ryoho, or the "Usui System of Natural Healing" in the lineage of Virginia Samdahl and Iris Ishikuro, two of the Reiki Masters trained in the United States by Mrs. Hawayo Takata.

Reiki II (Second Degree)
Students receive two Level II attunements, which enable them to learn and use the Reiki symbols to speed and intensify the flow of healing energy, transmit Reiki over great distances and connect with others on a subconscious level. Includes discussion and demonstration of Reiki II techniques as well as hands-on training. If necessary, a brief review of Reiki I procedures is also offered. Optional bonus: Additional two-hour training in past life regression offered at another time designated by class. The cost for Reiki II is $150 (or $200 for private training).

This 10 to 14-hour intensive (depending upon class size) includes the Reiki Master attunement, which further refines, focuses and intensifies the healing energy. Participants learn the Reiki Master symbol and receive instruction and hands-on training in using it to enhance the other Reiki symbols in healing work. In addition, participants learn to give Reiki attunements at the first and second-degree levels. Almost half the class focuses on hands-on practice. This affords participants the opportunity to gain confidence in offering attunements and in using the Usui Master symbol. Instruction is also given in the application of an additional symbol, which the Master administers to her/himself to stimulate energy, bring balance to the thymus gland and enhance health. Review of the Reiki I and II techniques is given as needed. Diana's Reiki I and II handbooks are provided (to those who learned from other teachers) in addition to extensive Reiki III materials. * Those who complete this course receive certification in Reiki, Level III.

• A private follow-up (usually during the week following the class) to review techniques, breathwork and running energy to enhance the master level work
• Progress sessions every other month for one year after the class to share questions, insights, experiences and gain further wisdom on the path of mastery.

The cost for Reiki III Master Program is $1,000. (If necessary, paying in installments is possible and is common at Level III. Please make arrangements in advance.)

Bonus to Master Class members: Participants receive additional training at a later date in advanced energy techniques to clear and balance chakras, etc.

• Teach at least two Reiki I and two Reiki II classes
• Write your own Reiki I and II manuals
• Become proficient in working at the Master level for at least a year

• Perform at least 100 full-body (one hour or more) Reiki sessions on clients (may be 100 different clients or, as is more likely, a number of clients who come for repeat sessions).
• Have each client fill out a session rating sheet (with brief questions).
• Write case studies for 10 clients' sessions.
• Answer both oral or written questions related to the Master work.

How to pay. . . Students may choose to pay in one lump sum, or when necessary, paying in installments is possible. If installments are chosen, at least $50 should be paid in advance and the remainder in monthly payments.

I consider being a Reiki Master Teacher a life-long commitment. Reiki Treatments

Diana generally spends a few minutes prior to treatment setting the client at ease or discussing concerns. All treatments take place with the client fully clothed and generally lying on a Reiki table. Unless a shorter, specifically-targeted treatment is requested, most sessions last for approximately one hour and a full body treatment is given. The session often begins with a body scan to pinpoint "hot spots," or areas needing extra attention. The Reiki technique which follows is either hands-on or if necessary may be performed an inch or so above the body. The full-body treatment covers all major organs and glands as well as all the major chakras (energy centers) of the body.

Cost is $65 for a one-hour, full-body session. A half-hour, targeted session costs $40.

Occasionally, Diana makes house calls for homebound clients; the cost for these sessions is $85 (in Raleigh, Garner, Cary, Fuquay-Varina or Apex). Diana is available by appointment at The Bodywork Center of Cary (directions) and on the first Thursday and the third Tuesday of each month in Raleigh, North Carolina.
